Project Objectives

The project will address three major technical challenges:

  • Development of flexible electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATS) that are formed with electromagnetic coils embedded in a polyimide film and backed with permanent magnets.
  • Development of opto-electrical driven active actuator and multi-element transducer assembly to maintain the proximity of transducers to the railhead.
  • Design of purpose built interfacing electronics and signal conditioning software/firmware to integrate the transducers and generate reliable defect detection.
